FC Edmonton Midfielder Ben Fisk Named NASL Player of the Week

Canadian youth international scores winner in postseason-clinching victory

NEW YORK (Oct. 11, 2016) – FC Edmonton midfielder Ben Fisk has been named North American Soccer League (NASL) Player of the Week after scoring the goal that clinched the Canadian side its first postseason berth since 2011.

Fisk powered home a perfectly placed header in the 13th minute of the Eddies’ 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Clarke Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The goal, which came from an assist by Dustin Corea, stood as the game-winner in a hard-fought battle that was played in snowy, cold conditions in Edmonton.

“I'm very grateful to be recognized by the league as its Player of the Week,” Fisk said. “It's a great reward for my own hard work and the team’s hard work. I would never be able to win an accolade like this without their excellent performances as well. We know we have a group that's capable of going all the way, so we’re just taking it one game at a time and trying to perform to the best of our abilities.”

Considered one of Canada’s most promising young talents, Fisk signed with the Eddies on July 28 after spending two years in Spain with Coruxo and Deportivo La Coruña. Since joining the NASL club, Fisk has been a breath of fresh air in the midfield for the Eddies, adding creativity and pace to an already stout defensive side.

After coming agonizingly close to scoring on a number of occasions in his initial appearances for Edmonton, Fisk has tallied game-winning goals in consecutive games – and at a time when the club needed it most. Thanks to the scoring heroics of Fisk, the Eddies have reserved their place in The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament that begins in November.

“Ben has been very good since we signed him,” said Eddies Coach Colin Miller. “He has been great to work with, his attitude has been first class, and he is a great example for all of the young Canadian players at the club as well.”

Fisk, 23, hails from Vancouver, where he was a longtime member of the Whitecaps FC youth setup. The 5-foot-10 midfielder made his professional debut with the Charleston Battery in 2013 before heading to Spain. He has been a regular in Canada’s youth national teams over the years.

Now with a postseason berth in hand, the Eddies turn their attention towards the Fall Season title race, where they trail the New York Cosmos by five points. Colin Miller’s side does have a game in hand over the Cosmos, so if the Eddies can put together a few more positive results, the race to the finish line could be an interesting one.

The Eddies will hit the road this weekend, visiting Minnesota United this Saturday at 8 p.m. ET at NSC Stadium. The game can be seen live on ESPN3 (U.S.) and (Canada).
