FC Edmonton midfielder Shamit Shome nominated for Canada Soccer’s U-20 Player of the Year

Nov 28, 2016

Canada Soccer has announced the list of nominees for the 2016 Canada Soccer Player Awards, with voting open today for both media and coaches. FC Edmonton’s Shamit Shome highlights the U-20 category, where the midfielder is nominated for Player of the Year.

Shome’s inaugural season as a professional was an impressive one. The 19-year-old registered 1,729 minutes in 29 appearances across all competitions in 2016 and did so on an Eddies squad that featured a heavy veteran presence.

On the international stage, Shome participated in three camps with Canada Soccer in England, Costa Rica, the United States and Honduras. Shome played a full 90-minutes in Canada’s first-ever win over England on March 27 and also wore the captain’s armband for his country’s match versus Costa Rica on September 3.

“Anything to do with national team and club when you’re being recognized is fantastic for the player and of course the club that they are playing for,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. “We have done nothing but sing Shamit’s praises all season long and rightly so, because of his attitude and his willingness to listen and learn and his humble approach to the way he goes about things. We are absolutely delighted and very proud of him. It doesn’t surprise us in the least that Shamit has been nominated for the CSA’s U-20 Player of the Year. It is quite an honour.”

Canadian coaches have the opportunity to vote for both the Canadian U-20 Players of the Year and the Canadian U-17 Players of the Year. Voting for these two categories will be split between national team coaches and other coaches, including those with Canada Soccer Coaching A & B Licences.

This marks the 24th year since the Canada Soccer Player Awards were introduced in 1993. The Awards recognize player performances with both the national teams and their respective club teams. Announcements for this year's awards, including the Canadian Para Soccer Player of the Year, will run from 9-16 December.
