Two goals from striker Tomi Ameobi helped FC Edmonton to a 2-0 win over the Golden Bears, giving head coach Colin Miller’s side a good first test before they head overseas to Manchester for four preseason friendlies against Wigan Athletic, Burnley FC, Newcastle United and Stoke City from Mar. 9-22.

“Overall it was an excellent exercise,” Miller said. “Thank you to the [University of Alberta Golden Bears] for giving us strong opposition. At some point the players can become stir-crazy just by playing and training against each other, But [the Golden Bears] were different opposition. It took us a bit of time to settle down but once we did I thought we played great.”

FC Edmonton rolled out two different Starting XI’s for both the first and second halves, allowing each player to earn time on the pitch throughout the full 90 minutes. Ameobi finished off the first goal in the 19th minute off a great through ball from offseason signing Dean Shiels before coming back on the pitch in the second half as a substitute to score his second. A great one-two from Dustin Corea and Pedro Galvao opened up space for Ameobi at the top of the box before he calmly pivoted and fired a shot to the bottom right corner for the 2-0 lead.

“I’m pleased for [Ameobi] as he scored two good goals,” Miller said. “We could’ve had another three or four. Overall the attitude was excellent and I’m really happy with the overall fitness levels of the guys.”

FC Edmonton preseason hits full gear beginning this Thursday when the club flies to Manchester, England for its 13-day, four-match preseason tour. The club has a quick turnaround its first friendly against Wigan Athletic FC Reserves on Saturday, March 11.

“This will be the test now,” Miller commented. “I said to the group before the game that we’re now starting to look towards Jacksonville. It’s one thing being a training ground player, it’s another thing being a first-team player in the NASL. The proof of the work we’ve been doing will be starting this Saturday against Wigan.

FC Edmonton kicks off their 2017 NASL campaign, April 2! Home opener Saturday, April 8 at Clarke Stadium. Lock down your season tickets with just a $50 deposit. For tickets and more information, click HERE, call 780.700.2600 or visit www.fcedmonton.com/claimyourthrone.
